The birth place of Imam Ali:
Imam Ali (R.A) was born under unusual circumstances. On the thirteenth of the holy month of “Rajab”, Fatima Rahmatullahi ‘alayh, his mother , visited the Ka’ba for performing the pilgrimage. During the course of the pilgrimage while circumambulating the Ka’ba, Hazrat Ali (R.A) felt the pangs of childbirth. She retired to a secluded place in the precincts of the Holy Ka’ba, and there Hazrat Ali (R.A) was born.
Moreover, Hazrat Ali (R.A) had thus the honor of being born in the House of God. This honor has endowed Ali with a halo of sanctity, which has become the subject of many legends. Hazrat Ali also known as Imam Ali, Lion of Allah and Mola Ali.
Who chose the Name of Hazrat Ali?
Hazrat Fatima (R.A) wanted to name the child “Asad” after the name of her father. Hazrat Abu Talib (R.A) wanted to name him Zaid. When the mother and the child came home, the Noble Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and Hazrat Khadija (R.A) came to see the newborn child.
Since his birth, the child had not opened his eyes, and that worried Hazrat Fatima (R.A) and Hazrat Abu Talib R.A. As the holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) took the child in his lap he (Imam Ali) opened his eyes. The first person that Ali (R.A) saw after his birth was the holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). When the Prophet Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was asked whether he approved of the child being named as Asad or Zaid, he said that as the child was born in the House of Allah, he should be named Ali, the word Ali being a derivative of name of Allah “Al-Ali” which means the Supreme.
Imam Ali (R.A) had thus the distinction of being named after Allah. The name acquired further sanctity as it was proposed by the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
